Fun Friday! First of all, we both want to thank you from the bottom of hearts for making this week so special for us during Teacher Appreciation Week.  We really enjoyed waking up each morning to a video of our students with the wonderful notes/pictures they wrote us.  We also are very grateful for the gift card to Amazon. It will be put to good use as soon as we prioritize our needs.  We are blessed!  Thank you, thank you, thank you.   Week 7 is in the books.  We are getting things figured out slowly but surely.  Thank you everyone for your support and patience.

Please click on the link above to hear/see Mrs. Pope reveal where Teddy was this week and hear a story from that country.

Our Greenhills Reads begins Monday, May 11, 2020.  Lola Lavine is Not Mean, by Monica Brown is the book we will start.  Mrs Gerould will introduce the book and explain our reading plan on Monday.  This is a wonderful time for your entire family to enjoy a book together at home.  If you did not pick up your book, do not worry.  The videos will be posted on the Greenhills website and your family can listen together.  This is a fun community building experience where the entire school is reading the same book.

Also, please click on the link below to hear Mrs. Gonzalez read Mother’s Day stories and see any Baby Yoda posts from our class:

Magnificent Monday! May the 4th be with you!  Happy Star Wars Day.  We hope you had a great weekend. Please click on the link above to see where Teddy is this week.  Remember to send in your guesses via email by Friday.  We love reading them and hearing your reasons as to why you thought he was in a specific country.

Middler families only:  Remember, your child will find his/her Week 7 slides in his/her Google Classroom.  For a login reminder, please see Mrs. Pope’s email she sent on 4/28/20 titled “Google Classroom Login”.

Youngers and Olders: your work will remain as it was last week.

Keep up the good work everyone!

Reminder:  Today’s Zoom will be celebrating Star Wars day and will have the Greenhills School SING attached to the end of the meeting.  Have your child wear green/Greenhills shirt and a snack/lunch on hand in case he/she gets hungry during SING.

Remember you can return any outstanding packets and library books to school during regular work hours.  There are boxes in the front of the school for both items.

Have a great week!

Friday, May 1, 2020

Friendly Friday!  We hope you had a great week.  Please click on the link above to find out where Teddy traveled to this past week and hear a story from that country.  He was a tricky one with the clues this week:)
A few things to let you know about:

  • Monday’s Zoom meeting will be a fun one for the Jetsetters.  It’s Star Wars Day, May the 4th, for just a little hint.  In addition, Please have your child wear green on Monday to show school spirit. The meeting will run a little longer so that we can have our virtual Greenhills SING after we celebrate May the 4th day.  Since the meeting will go longer than normal, please have a snack/lunch ready for your child to eat during the SING. If the meeting is going too long feel free to have your child “leave the meeting” anytime.  We know it will be a longer than schedule one. It will be a nice change of pace for the Jetsetters.
  •
  •  If your child has a library book at home, you can bring it to Greenhills during the work week and drop it off in the box for library books. If his/her library book is still at school, Mrs. Pope and I will get it returned to the library.
  •   If you still have any outstanding packets to turn in you still can do that too.  Mrs. Gerould has a box on the green bench right next to the office door for any late packets.
  •
  • The Eureka Schools Foundation (ESF), is currently having their final push for fundraising, April 23- May 15th.  Please be on the lookout for any communication and we thank you if you are able to donate to this foundation. They help fund a lot of programs within our district.
  •
  • Remember to check out our librarian, Mrs. Gonzalez,  website.  She has read alouds and much more.  Here is her link: http://greenhills.eurekausd.org/Programs-and-Resources/Library/index.html
  •
  • Also, Sami Kader has a lot going on with Sami’s Circuit.  Remember to checkout his website when you have time too:  youtube.com/therealsamikader
  • Enjoy your weekend!  See you all Monday.
    Mrs. Gould and Mrs. Pope

    Friday, April 17, 2020

Happy Friday everyone.  We want to give you all a huge high 5 for working through a new week of distance learning.  As we wade into these waters we appreciate how patient and supportive you all are.  Thank you. Please watch Mrs. Pope’s story and reveal link above. She picked a fun book to go with Teddy’s last country visit.

Remember today is the last day to turn in distance learning packets for grades TK-2 from weeks 1-3.
Below are the instructions as to how to go about that if you have not yet done so:

    • April 15-17 (any time) -  Put your paper packets in envelopes (not plastic) and drop inside the plastic tubs or boxes labeled with specific teacher’s names.
    • These collection tubs will be placed in front of your child's school (by the administration office).
    • Please label the packets with your child's FULL NAME, GRADE LEVEL, AND TEACHER.
    • Email your child's teacher if you have plans of returning the packets in a different way (e.g. scanning and emailing).
Packets will be available to teachers on April 20 and they will confirm that your child's work was received and reviewed.

Remember we have a set Zoom schedule now which is as follows:
    Mondays- ALL Jetsetters- 11:30am
    Tuesdays-Youngers only- 11:30am
    Wednesdays-Middlers only-11:30am
    Thursdays-Olders only-11:30am

This will be a recurring schedule and we will send out the links each Sunday evening.  Please have your child be prepared with paper and pencil and remind him/her of our Zoom expectations/etiquette, such as staying in their seat, eyes on the speaker, and remaining on mute unless it is their turn to speak.  This will help everyone to stay focused and learn just as they would in class.

    Sami-Circuit Updates!
Since we cannot hold our super fun heart pounding, foot stomping Sami-Circuit Days, Sami is doing his own version of super fun workout days! Sami has Live workouts Monday - Thursday, 1-1:30, so please consider joining in on the FUN! Also, every Friday Sami will have Chat with Sami - 30 minutes where you can log onto his YouTube channel at 1:00pm PST and ask him anything - even for just a shoutout for your family or for someone you know who needs a little extra boost!

    Monday, April 13, 2020

Welcome back Jetsetters!   We hope you had a nice week and enjoyed time off from school work.  We miss you all and we are excited to be distance learning with you all again.  We will be implementing new things starting this week. It will be fun to try them out, please be patient as we learn what works and what does not, or how to troubleshoot as we go.

A new Travels with Teddy video is up.  Please click on the link above to watch.  Remember to email your guess as to which country he is visiting.  Also, YOUNGERS- this will be the video you will watch each week and respond to for your writing prompt tomorrow. From now on, Teddy will post his newest video every Monday, and then Mrs. Pope will reveal and read the story at the end of the week.

We now have a set Zoom schedule for our class.  The week will go as follows:
    Mondays- ALL Jetsetters- 11:30am
    Tuesdays-Youngers only- 11:30am
    Wednesdays-Middlers only-11:30am
    Thursdays-Olders only-11:30am

This will be a recurring schedule and we will send out the link each Sunday evening.  Please have your child be prepared with paper and pencil and remind him/her of our Zoom expectations/etiquette.  Mrs. Pope and I are still getting used to interacting/watching all Jetsetters at once and the more focused they are they easier it is for us to make a connection.

Finally,  tomorrow is the last day of the Scholastic Book Fair.

This will be a new way for all of us to end the school year, but we know it will be successful because of the amazing team that we all are!!!

    Friday, April 2, 2020

Fun Friday!  Week 3 wasn’t that fun!  We did it. Good job everyone.  We are so proud of all of the Jetsetters.  We just saw the email regarding school staying closed through the end of the school year.  We are just heartbroken about not seeing and teaching the Jetsetters the way we love to.  We are sure there will be more meeting among our team and staff after spring break that will address a lot of the questions you might have.  We will keep you posted as we hear more. We miss all of you!

Above you will find Mrs. Pope’s country reveal link and a story to go with it. The story she chose is a fun one that compares our country with the one Teddy went to.  There were a lot of great guesses. Teddy will take next week off so he can prepare for his next trip when we return from spring break.  For now please enjoy the family time at home, be safe, stay healthy and have some fun. We will be back distance learning on April 14, 2020. From that point on:

Zoom meetings will be as follows every week:
    Mondays- All Jetsetters- 11:30am
    Tuesdays- Youngers at 11:30am
    Wednesdays- Middlers at 11:30am
    Thursdays- Olders at 11:30am.

    Sincerely,
    Mrs. Gould and Mrs. Pope

    Two things to note:
Our class LOVES Mystery Doug!  He will be doing a live show on April 7th.  Below is the information and link.

    Mystery Doug Livestream
Tuesday, April 7, 10 am Pacific / 1 pm Eastern

Also, Lena’s dad shared the following information that might be fun for you and your child to do. Please see his message below and the link that goes with it.

There are some scientists that need help counting penguins (mostly Adelie and gentoo species). It involves looking through pictures and putting marks on adults, chicks, eggs, and other animals, including predators.  It is quite simple and may be of interest to you and the students. The link is below.

    Tuesday, March 31, 2020

We want to update you on the new format of distance learning for each of our three grade levels following our Spring Break.  As multi-age teachers, we have attended all Greenhills' K-2 grade level planning meetings (Zoom-version) and have worked with our traditional classroom teachers to develop a format that best suits each grade level.  Each grade level is slightly different. Here is what you need to know for now with more information coming by grade level:
    Monday, March 30, 2020

Marvelous Monday!  We hope you all had a great weekend and it felt a little different than the rest of the week:)  Please click on the link above to find out from Mrs. Pope where Teddy traveled last and to hear her read a book from that country.  There were a lot of good guesses. Tomorrow we will put up Teddy’s next trip. Be on the lookout for our emails.

We hope you have your child's week #3 distance learning packet and you have started it.  If not, it should be on the way, as the district office mailed any that were not picked up.

On a different note, Distance Learning packets for youngers weeks 4,5,6 and olders weeks 4,5 (middlers are 100%on online) are now ready to be picked up at Greenhills.  These packets are for when we return from spring break on April 14.  If you are a parent of an older or younger please arrange a time to go to Greenhills and pick up the packet from the corresponding grade level of your child.  Remember social distancing guidelines. There will also be hand sanitizer out.If you have access to print your child’s packet and would prefer that option, please email Mrs. Pope and Mrs. Gould BY APRIL 1ST  to let them know you will be printing the packet.
More specific directions will be sent to each grade level with how to access the packets on line and login information you will need..

Also, a school closure will not stop the Scholastic Book Fair from happening at Greenhills.  This year our PTC will host an online book fair that starts on April 1st and ends April 15. Ordering information will be sent home on Wednesday, and it will also be available through the PTC eBlast.

Finally, we have set up 3 Zoom meetings this week.  The olders will meet Tuesday at 11:30, middlers on Wednesday at 11:30 and the youngers will be Thursday at 11:30.  The Zoom invites went out to you all yesterday. We are hoping your child can make it at that time. Thank you for your support with this.

    Sincerely,
    Mrs. Gould and Mrs. Pope

    Thursday, March 26, 2020

Thankful Thursday! We had so much fun seeing everyone on Zoom the past two days.  Thank you parents for helping to make that run smoothly for your child and allowing them to get online.  It really made our day to see the Jetsetters.

Teddy took another trip to another country.  Click on the “Travels with Teddy 2” button for his latest video.

Please keep emailing us pictures, work, videos, and updates.  We love receiving them.

We will update you with new information/dates as soon as we know something.  Mrs. Gould was at a kindergarten planning meeting all day, and Mrs.Pope was in a first grade meeting today (2nd grade was the day before).  Now that we have received the email from our superintendent about school closure going through May1, Mrs. Pope and Mrs. Gould will be in touch soon with updates on distance learning.

Thank you all for be patient and flexible.

    We miss you!'
    Sincerely,
    Mrs. Gould and Mrs. Pope

    Wednesday, March 25, 2020

Wonderful Wednesday to all of you! Welcome to day 8 of distance learning.  We know you are all doing well based on your emails, pictures, and Zoom meeting.  We look forward to “Zooming” with the purple group today.

We have also enjoyed reading your guesses as to what country Teddy traveled to.  We’ll have to step up tomorrow’s video and make it more challenging for you:). Be on the lookout for it sometime tomorrow.

We included the message below in an earlier email and we are glad to see that some of you have already written/made cards for them.  If you have time or want your child to do some community service this is a great way. Thank you Holly Johnson.

Holly Johnson, one of our parents, works with acute nursing facilities and has reached out to her client base to see if they would like cards from kids during this time. Many of the facilities are on lockdown so residents can't receive visitors. We think cards from kids will brighten the days of the residents and health care employees. We are experiencing this in my own family with Bobby's sister being in a locked-down facility. This would definitely brighten her day.

The letter HERE explains the optional activity and who to send the cards to. We divided the facilities up by letters of last names so each facility will receive cards. It would be great if each student could send 3-4 cards.

Please include this letter in your communication this week and let families know they can do this activity anytime.

Thank you and have a great day.
    Mrs. Gould and Mrs. Pope

We think it’s due time to set up some face-to-face time with our Jetsetters.  With the start of a second week of distance learning, we are hoping you have had time to settle into a routine because we are now ready to set up our first Zoom meeting with our Jetsetters.  We will set up a Zoom “afternoon” meeting (similar to a morning meeting at school) for our green group and then a separate one for our purple group. This way our buddy groups can see each other and talk with us. Shortly, you will receive an email from either Mrs. Pope or Mrs. Gould with the link, day and time for our Zoom meeting.  Make sure you have downloaded Zoom prior so your child is all set. If all goes well, your child will click on the Zoom link at the assigned time/day and he/she will see both of us and everyone else in the purple or green group. We will begin by greeting each student as they sign in and then have them answer, one at a time, a prompted question about how distance learning has gone so far. If time permits we will allow for questions they would like to ask us.

If upon receiving the email with the assigned time/day of the Zoom meeting, you find your child cannot make the meeting due to not having access to Zoom or other reasons, we will do our best to make a phone call or send a separate email to him/her.  Please reply to our email and let us know if that is the case with your family and we will make other arrangements.

Tonight, we would like for you to have a discussion about some online norms before logging into Zoom.  For example, students should mute themselves upon logging into Zoom (they’ll see a microphone image to click) otherwise we’ll have multiple students talking at the same time, as well as any background noise at each house. When we address each student, he/she will unmute to answer and then mute again when done talking.  Students should be respectful when listening to other students reply.  Mrs. Gould and Mrs. Pope are very cautious when our Jetsetters are doing anything online.  If at all possible, please be near by in case any problems arise so you can immediately help your child.

That's it for today.  We look forward to seeing and hearing from the students during our Zoom meetings.  We are crossing our fingers it goes as planned, but expecting that we might run into a snag or two. Please be patient as we try and learn new ways to connect.

    Friday, March 20, 2020

Friendly Friday to all of you.  Well, it has been our first 5 days of distance learning.  How did it go for all of you? Are you settling into routines?   We miss you and hope the packets and online options are going well.  Hopefully you are all enjoying the family time and staying healthy.
Mrs. Pope and I, although we have been staying home, have been very busy these past 5 days.  We have had many conference calls with each other and other teachers. We have had video conference meetings.  We have planned together, and with other teachers, via email, Facetime and texting. We are busy learning how to use online programs that are new to us and would be helpful for our Jetsetters and much more.  Our favorite thing that has filled our days is when we hear from you, see your work, see pictures, or respond to your emails. Please keep it up. Also, we want you to know that you have 2 teachers that follow all directions and protocol, just like we ask our Jetsetters to do.  We are making sure that everything we do or post follows the directions we are given. As we learn more, we will post more or let you know.

On a different note, our amazing librarian Mrs. Gonzalez has posted this link
If your child/our students want to "schedule" library into their week they can find Mrs. Gonzalez here http://greenhills.eurekausd.org/Programs-and-Resources/Library/index.html

Finally, please email us if you have any questions regarding the packet or how to access/use any of the online programs we have provided.  We love checking Reading A-Z/Headsprout and Freckle daily to see who has been reading and doing math.

More information to come, but for now enjoy your California Stay-cation and stay healthy.  We miss you all!!!

    Sincerely,
    Mrs. Gould and Mrs. Pope

    Hello Jetsetter families,

Well here we go venturing into new territory.  In all of our years of teaching we have never experienced a school closure for this length of time, not seeing our students for over two weeks, and learning how to teach via distance learning.  The Greenhills staff has a meeting tomorrow and we will learn/know more than.  We will pass along any information as soon as we can.

For now, in addition to the district wide packets we sent home on Friday,  Mr. Lee has posted some great activities both for St. Patrick's Day and with Sami's Circuit (Sami Kader). Please click on the FranzLee website link below to work on them:

We'd love to see the leprechaun trap that your child makes and remember to email pictures to Holly Johnson (Sophie's mom) at hollyjesq@aol.com so she can put them in the memory book for the end of the year.

Thank you for your patience and understanding during this time.  Your children and we are very lucky to have supportive parents like you.  You are great role models for all of us during this time of unknowns.

    Sincerely,
    Kate Gould and Faye Pope
    Thursday, March 12, 2020

Thankful Thursday!  We started our day with a morning meeting and then either worked on our Headsprout reading program or took a spelling test.  Next we began practicing our play song.  Afterward we were able to finish our South African art and learning about the newest tool in our Tool Box, the Please and Thank You Tool.  This tool has the icon of a key to remind the students that these words (please and thank you) are the “keys” to opening up communication and connecting with others.  Remember tomorrow all students are dismissed at 11:55am for parent teacher conferences.

    Wednesday, March 11, 2020

Wonderful Wednesday!  Today we started our morning with reading rotations.  The youngers are focusing on the letters G and W, high frequency words “of” and “they”, and identifying characters, settings, and events.  The middlers are focusing on the spelling pattern/decoding r-controlled “ar” words (barn, arm…), reading to find out how we can classify and categorize things, and plurals.  Finally, the olders are learning the phonic’s skill of diphthong with ou and ow, reading to find out what good citizens do, and using quotation marks.  Remember tomorrow  and Friday all students are dismissed at 11:55am for parent teacher conferences.

    Monday, March 9, 2020

Marvelous Monday!  Today we had our all school assembly where Mrs. Gerould talked to all of the Cubs about self control and the Please and Thank you Tool.  Then we jumped right into PE and library.  We finished up our jumping, coordination, and strategy units in PE and returned/checked out our library books.  After, we came back in and observed and recorded how our garlic and radish plants are growing. We are wrapping up our investigation if plants need water to grow.  In addition we started learning that there are four parts of weather: warm/cold, wet/dry, windy/still, sunny/cloudy.  After lunch we worked in the garden and had centers. The day flew by.  Remember tomorrow is Spring picture day.  We will have our pictures taken in the late morning.

    Thursday, March 5, 2020

Thankful Thursday!  Today we were business as usual with reading and math. We watched an older version of our end of the musical and started listing parts we might want to play in it. We are getting familiar with the songs and the storyline for this production.   In addition, the olders and middlers had spelling tests and everyone had Spanish today.  Last call for Scholastic book orders.  Today is the last day to order from Scholastic.  We will be submitting the order late tonight (Thursday) or early tomorrow morning (Friday).

    Wednesday, March 4, 2020

Wonderful Wednesday!  We had another fun yet busy day.  We continued on with reading rotations in the morning.  During math the youngers finished up their subtraction unit. The middlers are working with adding 10s to two digit numbers and using mental math when adding tens.  The olders took their subtraction with regrouping test. In the afternoon, the youngers went to the computer lab, while the olders and middlers went to Spanish.  On a different note, our Jetsetters have been doing a great job being flexible during the plumbing work that is going on at school.  They are making good choices by staying away from the caution tape and doing a nice job following the temporary bathroom and lunch set ups.  Please reinforce their good behavior at dinner tonight.  We are sure discussing port-a-potties at the dinner table will be quite fun:)

    Tuesday, March 3, 2020

Terrific Tuesday!  Today we started back into our reading rotations for the week.  The youngers are learning how some animals are alike and some are different, the vowel U, and the high frequency words “for” and “have”.  The middlers are reading about how people work with animals and long E words, while the olders are readig various texts on what excites us about nature, and words with air, are, ear (chair, dare, pear…).

    Monday, March 2, 2020

Marvelous Monday!  What a fun day we had today.  We started off the morning at the all school assembly.  Mrs. Gerould taught us about Dr. Seuss' birthday today and we heard a book about a famous women scientist that loved studying sharks. Then we went to PE and library.  When we returned to the classroom, we had science and learned about a new country, Trinidad.  In science each buddy group is recording and observing the garlic cloves they placed in cups, one in water versus the one out of water, and the radish plants we planted last week where some are getting water and others are not.  After lunch, we had garden and centers. Our garden looks, smells, and sounds amazing! Thank you garden volunteers.

    Thursday, February 27, 2020

Thankful Thursday!  Today we had an Author Assembly.  Author Karen Sanders-Betts and her daughter, illustrator Hannah Howerton came and taught us all about how they wrote and illustrated their book, The Little Lemon That Leapt.  Afterward we finished our tool box and South African art. In writing the olders and middlers have begun researching facts about their country.  Youngers will be starting their reports soon. Everyone had Spanish today. Please remember that tomorrow is early dismissal. All students are dismissed at 11:55am because it is the end of the trimester and teachers will be inputting grades.

    Wednesday, February 26, 2020

Wonderful Wednesday!  After reading rotations, we jumped into math.  The youngers are doing end of trimester math assessments.  The middlers are reviewing fast fact addition/subtraction.  The olders also doing end of trimester math assessments. In the afternoon the youngers went to the computer lab where they are working on their keyboarding program among other things.  The olders and middlers went to Spanish.  Thank you all for the thoughtful cards, gifts, flowers, words on my (Mrs. Gould) birthday.  It was a fun day all around and every Jetsetter and their family made me feel special. LOVE this group!

    Tuesday, February 25, 2020

Terrific Tuesday! Today we finally were able to get back into our usual routine of reading rotations in the morning.  This week, the youngers are reviewing all letters (printing and sounds) and high frequency words all while reading about how we can stay safe in stormy weather.  The middlers are reading about insects and focusing on the long i sound. Finally, the olders are exploring nature through text, especially in folktales and exploring word families with eer, ere, and ear.  In the afternoon half of the class learned about the new tool to add to our tool box, the Take Time tool. While the other half started their South African art.

    Monday, February 24, 2020

Marvelous Monday!  Today was a lot of fun. At our morning meeting, Mrs. Gerould talked to us about the Taking Time Tool and reminded us about the Power of Yet.  Then we went to PE and library where we exchanged library books, finished up our Chinese jump rope, and Hula Hoop games.  Next we had science and started learning about a new country, South Africa. In science we planted radish seeds to help us investigate why some seeds grow and others do not.  We ended the day with gardening and centers. On Friday notices were sent home with your child regarding conferences on March 12th and 13th.  Please make sure you look for that note (hot pink or lime green). Let us know if you have any questions.

    Thursday, February 20, 2020

Thankful Thursday!  We are READY! Tonight is the big night.  We cannot wait to dance for you. We had our dress rehearsal this morning and nailed IT!.  We hope you can make it tonight. Remember to bring your child to the school library tonight at 5:45pm, in full costume.   When you come pick up your child please make sure you connect with one of us so we know when your child is leaving.  We will keep a record sheet.

    Wednesday, February 19, 2020

Wonderful Wednesday! Today was a busy one.   It was fun to see our friends dancing and get an idea of what we will be doing tomorrow night when we watched the dress rehearsal for the half of the school dancing tonight. When we returned we had math and reading language arts. The youngers worked on fine motor skills and phonics while making a letter.  The middlers are finishing up place value and the olders continue with subtraction and regrouping. Reminder for tomorrow’s dance show: dress rehearsal is in the morning at 9:45am. Please have your child wear his/her costume (see below for costume specifics).  For the actual nighttime performance. Please have your child at the school library (by the office) at 5:45pm. Remember to have them come in “costume” of black pants/leggings- plain pink top (girls), blue pants/jeans -plain white shirt (boys).

    Tuesday, February 18, 2020

Terrific Tuesday!  Welcome back! Today we started our day with the very last dance practice with Ms. Faith. Next, we jumped into science and social studies.  In science we are beginning to explore what plants need to grow. We are investigating what will happen to garlic cloves when one sits in water and the other does not.  Each buddy group has their own experiment going with garlic.   In social studies, we are finishing up our Chinese art.  We are painting and making dragon heads and bodies. Then we went to the library to return and check out books. Mrs. Gonzalez is almost done reading the Caldecott nominee books and then we will vote on our favorite.  We ended the day with quiet time, dance review in the classroom, and learning how to write our country reports (olders/middlers). The youngers will start soon. Reminder due to the short week and the evening dance show, there will not be any yellow homework folders for the olders. The middlers and olders will come home with just their reading envelopes and will read nightly.  The youngers are to just read last week's decodable reader. If you sent it back today, we will make sure your child takes it home today.  New additions will come home next week.

    Thursday, February 13, 2020

Thankful Thursday!  Today we were able to pass out our Valentines in preparation for our party tomorrow.  The youngers continue to work on their fine motor schools with printing, while the olders and middlers are enjoying writing from picture prompts.  Today's was picture of a ladder that stretches all the way to the moon.  We continue to assess all Jetsetters to see their amazing growth this trimester.  Please keep up the good work at home with them.  Later in the day, everyone went to Spanish.  Our dance show is 1 week from today.  We are excited.

    Wednesday, February 12, 2020

Wonderful Wednesday!  This morning we began our reading rotations.  The youngers are reading all about weather, focusing on the letter/sound “k” “ck”, and the words “she” and “was”.  The middlers are reading about how animals survive in nature and long O words. Finally, the olders are reading how kids around the world are different, comparing and contrasting for a reading strategy, and words with “or, oar, ore, and ar” in them.  For math the youngers are continue to work on subtraction. The middlers are beginning to explore numbers that are 1 more/1 less and 10 more/10 less. The olders are  expanding their knowledge on regrouping when subtracting.

    Tuesday, February 11, 2020

Terrific Tuesday!  We hope you enjoyed the long weekend.  It was fun to be back with all of the Jetsetters today.  After our morning meeting, we had science where we continue to learn about animals and their habitats.  This is building up to us figuring out why the monarch caterpillars are no longer in the garden. Today our mini scientists discovered that Monarch caterpillars need milkweed to eat/survive. In addition to science, we made some of our Valentine crafts today.   We also met our new Sierra College interns that will be working in our rooms twice a week for several weeks.  It is nice to have an extra pair of hands to help our Jetsetters accomplish a lot in the morning. In the afternoon, we had centers.  We are beginning to start trimester 2 assessments throughout the day.  It is a great idea to review all of the skills mentioned in last week's website (you can go to "Yesterday's News" to reread).   Remember our Valentine’s party will be this Friday. If your child would like to exchange Valentines have him/her send them in on Thursday. We seem to get ants easily, so sending the Valentine's in on Thursday will help prevent that.

    Thursday, February 6, 2020

Thankful Thursday!  This morning started with our usual routine of reading rotations and math.  We had our dance practice today and learned the end  of our dance. We are practicing hard to be ready for our performance February 20. Please see the "Mark Your Calendars" for what your child should wear that night.  In the afternoon we learned about another tool we can use in our tool box, the Garbage Can tool.  Please ask your child about this one.  The end of the trimester is coming at the end of February.  This would be a great time to review letter sounds and writing them/high frequency words/numbers (youngers), high frequency words, word families, addition/subtraction facts to 10 quickly and word problems with 3 numbers (middlers), and reading comprehension/ regrouping, and adding /subtracting to 20 quickly (olders). We will be assessing throughout the month to see all the growth your child has made. Tomorrow is art docent.  Have your child wear clothes that are ok to get a little dirty:)Remember we do not have school this coming Monday, February 10. Therefore our library day will be Tuesday. We hope our library volunteers can come at 11:30.

On a different note, we noticed that some students still had their unopened Wednesday folder in their backpacks today.  Please make sure you go through it tonight because the dance tickets are in there and those are the only sets.

    Wednesday, February 5, 2020

Wonderful Wednesday!  We started our day with reading rotations.  In math the youngers are working on taking numbers apart (subtraction). The middlers are beginning to focus on looking at numbers that are 1 more, 1 less, 10 more, and 10 less.  This will help them see patterns and solve math problems more efficiently. The olders are subtracting with regrouping. In the afternoon, the youngers went to the computer lab while the olders and middlers went to Spanish.

    Monday, February 3, 2020

Marvelous Monday!  We hope you had a great weekend and enjoyed the Super Bowl.  Today was a busy and fun day.  It started off in the multi purpose room at our all school assembly.  Mrs. Gerould had a lesson about how/why we celebrate famous African Americans. Afterward we had PE and library.  In PE we practiced our dance.  We had a scheduled fire drill today.  Everyone did really well. We discussed the importance of being quiet so everyone can hear what to do and where to go. When we returned to class we had science and social studies.  For social studies we started learning all about Australia and drew a kangaroo. In science we continue to look for the answers about why the monarch caterpillars are no longer in the fictional garden we are learning about. We did this by taking a science walk around our school to discuss living and non living things and that living things need food to survive.  We also categorized foods animals would eat. At the end of the day we had garden and centers. Mrs. Monson will be our guest teacher tomorrow while Mrs. Gould has a meeting with other teachers/principal from our district. She will be back tomorrow. If you do not see a website update, you will know why. She gets back late.  It will start back up Wednesday.

    Thursday, January 30, 2020

Thankful Thursday!  We all had reading rotations and math as usual today.  During writing this week, the youngers focused on using 3 strategies to be assertive in their writing, they are called “brave spellers”. When they try stretching out words so they can isolate sounds in them to write it down, using tools/print from around the room, and what they already know to write in their folders. The middlers are writing opinions and enjoying providing reasons for the opinion.  The olders are reading non fiction and finding key details (underlining) to use as support in their informational writing. Ask them if tornadoes are dangerous- they know several details to prove their point. Sami Circuit Family Night is tonight. Tomorrow is our 100th day of school! We will do some activities that involve counting to 100 and writing about it.

    Tuesday, January 28, 2020

Terrific Tuesday!  Our new week of reading rotations began this morning.  The youngers are learning about what kinds of things grow on a farm, the letter F and R, and the high frequency words “he” and “with”.  The middlers are reading about how animals bodies’ help them, and the long A sound words. Our olders are reading all about what makes different parts of the world different and words with silent letters, “wr, kn, gn, mb, and sc”.  They are also practicing asking questions while they read to look for key details. The youngers went to Spanish before lunch. In the afternoon, half of the class started an art project for China, while the other half learned another tool from their tool box.

    Monday, January 27, 2020

Marvelous Monday!  We hope the weekend was filled with fun and family.  This morning we had our all school assembly where Mrs. Gerould discussed the "Using our Words" tool.  She also showed videos of Greenhills Cubs doing the right thing, such as walking in line with enough personal space, or entering a classroom calmly and quietly. Then we went to library and PE. Inj PE we played a hula hoop game and Chinese jump ropes. When we returned we started our new science unit on plant and animal needs.  We are trying to help students in a fictional town figure out what happened to the monarch butterflies. In social studies, we began learning about China.  In the afternoon we had garden and centers.

    Thursday, January 23, 2020

Thankful Thursday!  After our reading rotations we had math and the youngers went to Spanish.  In math the youngers are doing more "joining"/adding with the plus sign, while the middlers are beginning to work with numbers between 11-19. The olders are regrouping with two digit numbers. At the end of the day we practice our dance.

     Wednesday, January 22, 2020

Wonderful Wednesday!  This morning we had our Sami Circuit time.  We had a lot of fun doing push ups, squats, running, jumping, and motivating each other. Then we started up on our reading rotations.  The youngers are focusing on how living things change as they grow (which will tie nicely into the science unit we will start next week that Mrs. Gould was just trained on), the vowel E, and the high frequency word “are”.  The middlers will be reading about how we get our food, digraphs oo, u, and word endings with “ing” and “ed”. The olders started reading about ways we express ourselves, words with long u, and identifying the main topic and key details when reading.  In the afternoon the youngers went to the computer lab while the olders and middlers went to Spanish.

    Tuesday, January 21, 2020

Terrific Tuesday!  Welcome back from the long weekend.  We hope you enjoyed the family time. Today, Mrs. Gould was at a science training all day, so Mrs. Monson was our guest teacher and Mrs. Pope is feeling better and ready for the week.  We started our day by discussing Dr. Martin Luther King and Rosa Parks. Then we made a timeline about Rosa Parks. We went to the library and had centers in the afternoon. We have Sami Circuit tomorrow, so remember to where your tennis shoes.  It will be fun exercising to music.

    Thursday, January 16, 2020

Thankful Thursday!  Whew! Your children are wonderful.  It was a rainy day and Mrs. Pope was home sick. Mrs. Monson was able to come in last minute to be our guest teacher.  For begin cooped up all day, learning a new dance, and not having Mrs. Pope here, your children did great.  Hopefully it continues for you at home tonight:).  Today was our first dance practice.  We had a fun time learning to work together on stage and use coordination to master the dance moves as a team.  In the afternoon we continued to either work on our Mexico art project or we learned about a new tool to add to our Tool Box, the “using our words tool”  ask your child about it over dinner tonight.

    Wednesday, January 15, 2020

Wonderful Wednesday!  After our reading rotations we jumped right into math.  The youngers explored "joining" numbers (addition). The middlers, through games, continue to learn different strategies for subtraction, such as fact families and using adding to subtract. The olders built and wrote regrouping with addition problems.  In the afternoon, the olders and middlers went to Spanish while the youngers went to the computer lab. The olders and middlers chose their country for their country report.  The youngers will start theirs in awhile.  Tomorrow we start our first dance practice for the February dance show. More information to come, but for now, know that the date or our dance show is Thursday night 6-8pm, February 20, 2020.

    Tuesday, January 14, 2020

Terrific Tuesday! After our morning meeting, we started our reading rotations. The youngers are learning about the high frequency word “my”, the letter “Hh”, practiced our "optional" reading homework folder, characters, settings, events, and our essential question is what do living things need to grow.  The middlers are exploring the question how life is different than it was long ago, magic “e” words with long o, long u, and long e words and comparing and contrasting text. The olders are discussing how weather affects us, today we read and wrote about tornadoes, all long e words, and text evidence to find key details in their reading.  In the afternoon we continued to learn about Mexico through art and/or learned a new tool for our Tool Box- "using our words".  Mrs. Gould will be at a district science meeting tomorrow morning, so Mrs. Monson will be our guest teacher again. Mrs. Gould will be back before lunch.

    Monday, January 13, 2020

Happy Monday everyone!  We hope you enjoyed your weekend. Thank you to the art docents that came in on Friday.  We loved making self portraits (olders/middlers) and outlining with chalk then filling in all of the white space around (youngers).   We had a fun and unique day today.  We started off  going to the library and checking out books.  Next we  had a Mad Scientist assembly.  At this assembly we learned all about air.   We saw experiments where balls can float, how air can go in and out of things, and hovers crafts at work.  Afterward we came back and started learning about the country of Mexico.  In the afternoon, we had centers and art.

Thankful Thursday!  This morning was our very fun and memorable holiday party!  We traveled around the world to 6 countries and made a craft or played a game representing that country at every stop.  Each time we came to a country our passport was stamped.  We made rainsticks, gingerbread houses, and much more.  Then we had our "in flight snacks" with an international touch. Thank you to everyone who contribute one way or another.  It was AMAZING!  Afterward we watched Mystery Doug our favorite weekly science video. Then we opened a "gift" and made a wish.  Enjoy your vacation, holidays, and time with your family. We will miss the Jetsetters and look forward to seeing them on Tuesday, January 7, 2020.  Happy New Year!

Terrific Tuesday!  Today, we began a new week of reading rotations.  The youngers are learning about the high frequency word “a”, the letter/sound “Pp”, and how tools help us to explore.  The middlers are working on how our body moves, and blend words. While the olders are focusing on words with long and short i, and reading about what happens when families work together.  We also learned about the next tool in our Tool box, the Quiet/Safe place tool. We now know we can imagine this place in our head when we are feeling uncomfortable or unsafe.  Ask your child about the sign to show this tool.

A huge thank you to all of our Dad's Club dads for the hard work they put in this past weekend.  It was so nice to come to school Monday and feel like the school was sparkling!  They did a ton!  A new Buddy Bench, painted line up lines, clearing shrubs... just to name a few.

Also, if you have any artifacts from long ago- we will be having a "museum" on Monday (see Mrs. Pope's email for details) the only change is that the items can come in anytime this week (not Monday) so we can set up the museum.  If you do send something in, please label your items so we can safely return them to you.  Thank you.

Marvelous Monday!  We kicked off the day with our morning meeting.  Mrs. Gerould talked to us about all of the amazing things the Dad's club worked on at school this weekend, how we can be like Disneyworld and pick up trash, and what a "Quiet Safe Place" can be. This last part will be our social emotional focus for the week.  After our scheduled PE and library time, we had science and social studies. For social studies we compared now and long ago and made a horn book (ask your child what that is) and in science we explored how to make objects move slower and faster and learned the term "force".  We ended the day with garden and centers. 4 more days until Jog-a-thon!!
    Thursday, September 26, 2019

Thankful Thursday! Today everyone had Spanish.  Tomorrow will be one week away from one of our most memorable days of the school year, Jog-a-thon!  We have wonderful families that have volunteered to help. If you cannot help, but have time to come watch your child run or enjoy lunch with him/her please mark your calendar.  Remember to have your child wear some sort of orange- T-shirts will be supplied so orange can be anywhere other than where the T-shirt goes, shorts, socks, sweatbands...
This Friday, Greenhills will be celebrating that 50% of our students have raised funds for our job-a-thon.  If we reach 75% by Friday, they will treat the students to a popsicle.  If we are at 95% participation by midnight on jog-a-thon day, Mrs. Gerould will reward the students with extra recess.  Any amount of money counts for donation and particpating- $1.00-$150 it all is appreciated!

Our class color for jog-a-thon day will be orange.  We all will have the same t-shirts that day, but feel free to spice it up with orange sweat bands, shorts, socks, riboons...

Wonderful Wednesday!  Our mathematicians have been busy learning and talking about numbers.  The youngers are working on "how many fewer" inside of a 10 frame.. The middlers worked with a new "math tool" a number bracelet to work with addition facts.  They also worked on showing their facts in concrete (build it), representational (draw a model), and abstract (number sentence) models. The olders are working on math strategies such as making 10 to add.   We are also very busy becoming writers of personal narrative stories. All students are learning how to add details to their pictures and words to elaborate on a small moment that happened in their lives.
    Tuesday, September 24, 2019

Terrific Tuesday!  After our morning meeting, we started our reading rotations.  The youngers are learning about how are senses can help us learn, the word "see" and the letter "Ss".  The middlers are learning about what friends do together, and the olders are focusing on how we care for animals, long A words (bake, tame…), and looking for details in stories.  In the afternoon we learned about the "Breathing Tool" and when that can help us. Ask your child what the tape measure is.
    Monday, September 23, 2019

Marvelous Monday!  Today at our all school assembly, Mrs. Gerould talked to us about green slips, self control, and lining up.  After the assembly we had PE and library.  When we returned to class we had science and social studies.  In science, we began learning about engineers and how to make things move.  For social studies, we began learning about quilts and how they tell stories from the past.  Then we started to make a quilt to go along with our now and long ago unit. We ended the day with garden and centers.

Thankful Thursday!  We are thankful we have such amazing families that support our students and help out in many ways.  Our day started with a lot of high energy as we moved through Sami's Circuit. We exercised all over the multi purpose room all to bright lights and music.  It was inspiring and fun. Another part of our day was learning about and coloring the American flag.  Mrs. Gould enjoyed her science training and is looking forward to watching the Jetsetters become engineers as they learn about forces and build a marble run (culminating project).  This will start in the next two weeks and go through January.

    Wednesday, September 18, 2019

Wonderful Wednesday! Today we tried to stay neat and clean for the first part of the morning, until we took our school pictures.  Afterward we jumped into reading rotations. For math the youngers are working on more and fewer. The middlers are working on combinations to make a number up to 9 and the olders are working on doubles.  In the afternoon, the youngers went to the computer lab after their mini writing lesson about when writers "think they're done, they've just begun" and that we, as writers will add to our writing and pictures.  The olders/middlers had Spanish. For writing time with the middlers they are looking at their pictures to add details to their words. The olders have become comfortable with their tiny notebooks (ideas) and planning/writing a 5 finger personal narrative.

Tomorrow is Sami's Circuit.  Please wear proper shoes and clothes for exercise.  Also, tomorrow, Mrs. Gould will be at a science training all day.  She will be bringing back a fun science unit to start in the next few weeks.  Mrs. Monson will be our guest teacher again.

    Tuesday, September 17, 2019

Terrific Tuesday!  After our morning meeting we jumped right into reading rotations.  The youngers kicked off the week learning about how baby animals move, the letter/sound "Aa" and the word "we".  The middlers are learning about "l" blends and what makes a pet special. The olders will be reading stories about how pets can be important friends.   In the afternoon, we had another social emotional learning (SEL) lesson on identifying/naming feelings and emotions. Everyone is working on writing about "small moments" in their lives during writing time.
    Remember picture day is tomorrow.

Marvelous Monday!  We hope you enjoyed the long weekend.  The Greenhills staff had a very productive professional development day last Friday.  We were able to focus on social emotional learning. We heard Joe Beckman discuss the importance of making a difference in each other's lives and Grace Dearborne teach us about classroom management techniques, just to highlight some of our busy day.  Today your children were able to paint the landforms they built last week, had library, and PE. We finished the day with centers (we cancelled garden due to the rain today). We have a busy week ahead with picture day on Wednesday and the first Sami Circuit day of the year on Thursday.
    Thursday, September 12, 2019

Thankful Thursday! Our Thursday was full of learning today. This morning we met Joe Beckman, at an all school assembly.  He talked to us about being kind and the impact it can make on not just one person, but the domino effect it has on a larger scale.  Our challenge from Mrs. Gerould, after the assembly is to smile at just one person a day.  We can do it! We continued to learn and write about American symbols, had reading rotations, and math.  Later in the day, we had Spanish with maestra Jimenez.

Remember your child does not have school tomorrow.  The teachers will be at a professional development inservice day. Enjoy your weekend.

Olders yellow homework folders will come home today, but reading envelopes will stay at school in order to prepare them for next week.

Wonderful Wednesday!  It was another busy day in the Jetsetter classroom.  After reading rotations, we jumped right into math. The youngers are learning to graph and work on social studies writing.  The middlers are wrapping up shapes and beginning to explore the various ways you can add to make a specific number (2+3=5, 4+1=5…).  Finally, the olders focused on word problems. In the afternoon, the youngers visited the computer lab while the olders and middlers were in Spanish.

Tomorrow (Thursday) we have a special assembly.  Joe Beckman will be speaking to our Cubs about kindness and how to be a difference maker.  His signature is wearing a baseball cap backward.  Mrs. Gerould has given permission for all students (and staff) to wear baseball caps backward tomorrow (Thursday).  If your child would like to wear a backward baseball cap tomorrow, Go For It!
    Thursday, September 5, 2019,

Thankful Thursday!  After our morning meeting, we continued our reading rotations.  In math, the youngers worked on counting and science writing. The middlers continue to work on shapes (this is the week for the middlers to start following the bright pink sheet calendar for their math workbook), while the olders focused on fact families.   Everyone had their second Spanish lesson today.
Please remember that next Friday, the students do NOT have school while the teachers are at a professional development day.

    Wednesday, September 4, 2019,

Wonderful Wednesday!  Today was our first official day of reading rotations with volunteers.  Thank you all for coming. We hope you know how critical you are to making this part of the multi age program run smoothly and effectively for our Jetsetters.  During reading rotations, the olders began practicing what they will be doing each night with their take home reading envelopes (word sorts, stories, comprehension…) the yellow envelope will start coming home next week, once they know how everything works.  The middlers received their blue "book bags" (envelopes) today. They are in their backpacks.  Please follow the reading log and send the blue envelope back tomorrow.  Finally, the youngers practiced rotating in their small groups while sorting letters and words, doing phonics with Mrs. Gould, and writing their letters. In the afternoon, the first and second graders had their first Spanish class, while the kindergartners went to the computer lab.   Mrs. Laube was back, so Mrs. Gould could work one on one with second graders.

Terrific Tuesday to everyone!  We hope you enjoyed the long weekend and had some quality family time.  This morning, we went to our make up library time since we did not have school on Monday.  Remember to keep books in backpacks when not in use, so your child can turn it into the yellow library cart when he/she sees it outside on Fridays and Mondays.  When we returned to class, we had a lesson on various types of landforms and began making tear art models of the different types of landforms (capes, bays…). Later in the morning, Mrs. Reichert, our school counselor, came to discuss the zones of regulation, helping the Jetsetters understand different feelings they might have and ways to get back into the "green zone" of feeling calm and focused.  The youngers had their first Spanish class today too. We ended the day with centers and writing. Mrs. Laube was our guest teacher in the afternoon, so Mrs. Pope could do some beginning of the year assesing with some of the middlers. Tomorrow, Mrs. Laube will return in the afternoon so Mrs. Gould can do some assessing.

Thankful Thursday,  This morning we continued to practice reading rotations, and math.  After lunch, we we read a funny story by Robert Munsch.  Where all of the Jetsetters summed up that they learned the importance of listening to their parents and following directions.  Ask them about it, it's called, Purple, Green, and Yellow . After the youngers went home, the olders and middlers worked on writing and phonics. Tomorrow we have PE and since it is a long weekend, you are welcome to have your child return his/her library book starting tomorrow (due Tuesday due to the long weekend). The yellow cart will be outside

Terrific Tuesday!  Today we began learning our routines for reading rotations.  We will be practicing this all week, so we will be ready next week when wonderful parent volunteers join us.  Each grade level also started grade level specific math lessons.  The youngers started learning about how to use manipulatives properly and that they can help them solve problems, the middlers are reviewing shapes,  2D and 3D, while the olders reviewed the proper use of manipulatives and used them to solve problems. Please remember tomorrow, Mrs. Gould will be at a district science meeting all day.  Mrs. Monson, a former multi age parent, will be our awesome guest teacher with Mrs. Pope.

Olders, remember to bring back the yellow homework folder asap. They will come home Friday with optional homework in them.
Parent volunteers will begin next week.

Marvelous Monday!  Welcome to our first website update.   Thank you all for coming to back to school night. It was so nice to see you there supporting your child and meeting/seeing you all. We had a fun filled day of learning.  Our day started with Mrs. Gerould teaching us about working together.  After our morning assembly, we visited the library.  Today was our first day to check out books. Your child will bring home his/her book today.   One suggestion is to have your child get in the habit of keeping the library book in his/her backpack when not reading it.  This is a great "home" for the book. The yellow library cart will be outside of the P2 door each Friday (if you do not want to worry about it over the weekend) and Monday.  Please make sure your child turns in his/her book so another one can come home each week. After the library visit, we had PE. One group worked on following directions, and spatial awareness, while the other group played with a large parachute.  Later in the day, to kick off our country year, we began learning what it means to be global as well as working with continents and oceans on a map.
